My first rule for holiday decor is to work from the outside in. The spirit of the season begins at the front door, or for this home at the top of the driveway.
We used magnolia leaves in the wreaths and the garland along the stairway to add texture, and because the magnolia is a connection to the client’s southern roots. For a sense of continuity I have incorporated the magnolia into each of the rooms.
No matter what you observe, the winter Holliday season is about traditions and memories. I have coordinated the holiday design of this family’s home for nearly 20 years - each year we refresh a little and bring out reminders of holidays past. The collection of nutcrackers on the desk behind the settee is a wonderful example for how cherished objects are linked to memories which can be built upon each year.
Decorating the home for the Hollidays is the best way to conjure and spread cheer throughout the house for the holiday. That said, modest holiday decoration can be every bit as effective; just add one or two reminders in the public rooms and that can do the trick.
