Which Hair Extensions Are Right For You?
Unfortunately, not all of us were blessed with long, voluminous, luscious hair. Fortunately, we can all achieve that look with the help of hair extensions. A big thank you to whoever invented hair extensions. Hair extensions come in handy when trying to achieve certain hairstyles that our hair just can’t seem to achieve. Picking the right hair extensions can be challenging as there are many types on the market so I’ve provided some insight below to help you choose which type is best for you.
Clip-In Extensions
Clip-in extensions are a temporary type of hair extensions. This type of hair extensions provides complete versatility as you can clip them in and out whenever you want without having to go to a salon. Clip-in extensions are completely damage free when applied and taken care of properly.
Longevity: Daily
Hair Type: All types EXCEPT short hair, for extensions to blend evenly hair should be at least shoulder length
Maintenance: Bush and detangle, when not in hair wash as normal once every four to six weeks and then style as desired
Tape-In Extensions
A semi-permanent type of hair extensions. Tape-in extensions are applied by simply taping the extension onto the root of your natural hair. Tape in extensions are a safer type of extension as they cause no damage to the hair.
Longevity: 6-8 weeks
Hair Type: All
Maintenance: Brush and detangle, gently wash as normal one to two times a week and then air dry or blow dry on low heat
Micro Loop Extensions
Micro loop extensions are more of a long term type of hair extension. Micro loop extensions are applied by combining strands of your natural hair to a tiny copper ring. This type of hair extension is entirely damage free when applied properly.
Longevity: 3-4 months
Hair Type: All
Maintenance: Bush and detangle, gently wash no more than once a week by applying shampoo before water, then rinse and repeat as needed. Gently towel dry or use a blow dryer on low heat.
Sew-In Extensions
Sew-in extensions are a semi-permanent type of hair extension. Keeping sew-in extensions in any longer risks damage to the hair such as breakage and irritation. Sew-in extensions are applied by having your natural hair braided into cornrows and then having the extensions sewn into the braid.
Longevity: 6-8 weeks
Hair Type: All, but must be long enough to braid
Maintenance: Brush and detangle, gently wash once every one to two weeks as normal and then style as desired
Fusion Extensions
Fusion hair extensions are semi-permanent type of hair extension. Fusion extensions are done by bonding the hair to the extensions using keratin glue and a hair iron on a low heat setting. Fusion extensions are not damaging to your hair unless done incorrectly.
Longevity: 4-8 weeks
Hair Type: All
Maintenance: Brush and detangle, gently wash as normal one to two times a week and style as desired
Halo Extensions
Halo extensions are a type of hair extension that sit on your head with a thin, invisible wire. These extensions are a temporary type of extension as you can put it on and take it off daily. Halo extensions are entirely damage free to your natural hair.
Longevity: Daily
Hair Type: All hair types EXCEPT short hair
Maintenance: Brush and detangle, when not in your hair, wash extensions as normal once every two months and style as desired
Glue-In Extensions
Glue-in extensions are a semi-permanent type of hair extension and applied by glueing the extension to the root of your natural hair. Glue-in extensions are not dangerous to get, but are the most damaging as the glue may pull your natural hair out if not removed properly.
Longevity: 4-8 weeks
Hair Type: All
Maintenance: Brush and detangle, gently wash once every one to two weeks completely avoiding the glue area and style as desired
