We at Modern Day Wife had the incredible opportunity of chatting with Jessica Ross—actress, publicist, and reporter. Read below to learn more!
What inspired you to start your own business, and how has that initial inspiration evolved as your company has grown?
As an actress, publicist, and reporter, my inspiration to delve into creating reality TV blossomed during the pandemic. For the first time, I had to self-tape auditions, which meant mastering camera angles, sound, and lighting. My agent also encouraged us to start creating our own content. Having been both in front of the camera and behind the scenes in reality TV, it felt natural to merge these experiences. This led to the creation of my reality TV show, Hollywood Unexpected, sparked by a friend's surprise trip to Virginia after a particularly stressful year. What began as an innovative way to adapt during a challenging time has evolved into a dynamic business, continually driven by my love for storytelling and connecting with audiences.
This journey into reality TV production has been incredibly rewarding. It allowed me to leverage my skills and understanding of the entertainment industry in new and exciting ways. The process of developing Hollywood Unexpected was both challenging and exhilarating, pushing me to grow creatively and professionally. Each episode is a testament to the resilience and adaptability that we all had to embrace during the pandemic.
I am committed to expanding my repertoire, exploring new formats, and engaging with a broader audience. The success of Hollywood Unexpected has opened doors to numerous opportunities, including collaborations with other talented professionals and the creation of additional content that resonates with viewers. My initial inspiration has not only persisted but has flourished, ignited by creativity and a relentless drive to innovate.
What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced as an entrepreneur, and how have you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges I've faced is cultivating patience. In the fast-paced world of entertainment, the desire for immediate results is intense, but the reality often involves enduring long waiting periods and navigating countless uncertainties. Over time, I've learned to stay calm under pressure, even though my naturally energetic personality and sometimes impatient nature can make this difficult.
To effectively balance multiple projects, I rely on meticulous planning and organization. I use a combination of a day planner and digital tools like Google Calendar, which I sync with my emails. This dual system allows me to write everything down and set alarms for critical tasks, ensuring that nothing falls through the cracks. These strategies are essential in keeping me on track and managing my various responsibilities efficiently.
Managing stress is another significant aspect of maintaining balance in my hectic schedule. I have found that indulging in activities that help me relax is crucial for my well-being. Spending quality time with friends, attending exciting events, and exercising are some of my favorite ways to unwind. Additionally, I find great comfort in simply soaking in a jacuzzi. These moments of relaxation not only help me recharge but also provide a necessary mental break, allowing me to return to my work with renewed energy and focus.
Embracing patience and finding ways to stay organized and de-stress have been pivotal in overcoming the challenges of my career. By continuously refining these skills, I've been able to navigate more effectively and maintain a sense of balance and well-being amidst the chaos.
Can you share a pivotal moment or decision that significantly impacted the trajectory of your business?
A pivotal moment was when Hollywood Unexpected won two awards. Achieving something I hadn't anticipated not only validated my efforts but also ignited my interest to create even more.
This newfound motivation led me to embark on several new ventures. One was the launch of my own fashion line for Shine the Light On. This initiative is particularly meaningful to me because 50% of the proceeds support the World Animal Protection Foundation, aligning my business efforts with my commitment to animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
Additionally, I am currently working on another TV show, Chasing Stars, which features an all-female lead cast.
These ventures reflect my dedication to making a meaningful impact through my work. My journey has taught me the importance of perseverance and creativity. Whether it's through innovative television content or fashion initiatives with a purpose, I strive to contribute positively to society.
In today's rapidly changing market landscape, how do you stay innovative and adaptable to ensure your business remains competitive?
I constantly attend industry events in person and virtually. This keeps me up to date about new trends and brands. I regularly read industry blogs such as Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. These publications are essential resources for staying informed about the latest developments in pre-production, production, post-production, and casting. They offer detailed analyses and behind-the-scenes information that help me anticipate industry trends and make informed decisions about my projects.
I am active on all major social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, and LinkedIn. Each platform offers unique insights and real-time information from around the world, helping me stay ahead of the curve. For instance, Instagram and TikTok are excellent for discovering new talent and seeing what types of content resonate with different audiences, while LinkedIn provides professional updates and opportunities to connect with industry experts. Moreover, I leverage these platforms to share my own work and engage with my audience.
I also participate in webinars and online courses to continually expand my knowledge and skills.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who are just starting their own journey?
My advice is to create a long-term plan and be prepared for challenges and delays. The journey is rarely straightforward, so having a clear roadmap helps navigate obstacles. However, remain flexible and ready to pivot strategies as circumstances change.
Balancing your life to avoid burnout is crucial. Take care of yourself physically and mentally, with regular exercise, a healthy diet, and sufficient sleep. Practicing mindfulness or other stress-relief techniques can help keep your mind sharp and resilient.
Building a solid support system is also vital. Surround yourself with people who believe in your vision and who you trust and enjoy being around. This includes your professional team and friends and family for emotional support. A reliable team can reduce stress and help you focus on achieving your goals more effectively. Collaborating with individuals who bring different skills and perspectives can also drive innovation and help overcome challenges efficiently.
Stay connected to your purpose. Celebrate achievements, learn from setbacks, and maintain persistence and a positive mindset.
